The history of Botox dates back more than 120 years. For the first time at the end of the 19th century, a Belgian scientist discovered the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which is responsible for synthesizing the so-called botulinum toxin. The Belgian was tasked with uncovering the causes behind mass food poisoning from the consumption of sausages (the infectious disease "botulism").
In 1920, scientists from the University of California made the first attempts to isolate botulinum toxin, which took them over 20 years. In 1970, it began to be used to treat strabismus. During the treatments, it was found that the toxin also smoothed out the wrinkles in the area between the eyebrows. After its effectiveness was proven, the American Allergan licensed the treatment and branded its product with the name "Botox".
How it works?
Whenever we make any movements with our face, the nerves send impulses to the muscles that cause them to contract and relax, which also allows us to make different kinds of facial expressions. The injection of Botox blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle, leading to its permanent relaxation – i.e. without shortening. This also prevents the formation of wrinkles. It is for this reason that Botox is effective in removing wrinkles formed by muscle movement, but not those that are the result of skin relaxation.
